Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
It occurs to me that this is probably something I should have asked about before now, but no one ever accused me of being particularly good at thinking ahead.

In not too terribly long, here, I'm going to abandon all you fine folks (temporarily, I promise) to spend some time in Tuscany for an art retreat. I'm very excited! But I also realized that I don't really know any Italian at all. I was hoping maybe I could beg the favor of someone here who does speak Italian to teach me how to read and write it, so that when I go overseas I'm only held back by the mute thing, not by a language barrier too.

I'll buy cookies?

Tuscany is very beautiful. I can help you a little, but my brother could also give you a shorter lesson with telepathy if he's willing.

Whatever is easiest for you guys. I don't want to put anyone out, I just don't want to seem like a complete idiot while I'm over there. I've never been to Italy before.

The people you are with will most definitely speak English and the people your age may as well, but older people or people in smaller towns will not speak much English. It is good to know a little at least.

It seems like something I ought to be doing anyway, learning a second language. Or...third, if you count ASL.

It can be a trade. You can teach me some ASL and I will teach you some Italian.

Good. I have always wanted to learn sign language.

Artie, you know that the course is in English, right? Because it's for Americans?

...no...

That doesn't cover the trying to get a coffee after hours thing, though.
